Forgotten Soldiers

15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry
The Scandinavian Regiment

The 15th website has received the following photos of men who are believed to have served in the 15th, but whose names are not known.  Your help is requested to identify these forgotten soldiers.  If you can, then your discovery will be prominently highlighted in the What's New section and your name added as a source on the profile of him which I will create and post on this website. Thank you for any clues you can provide!  Please send them to me, Scott Meeker, by email < s.c.meeker@15thwisconsin.net> or postal mail <7307 Vista Court, Middleton, WI 53562 USA>.  Think of the joy his living descendants will experience if you can help show them what he looked like!

An Unknown Civil War Soldier in uniform who is believed to have served in the 15th. Unknown No. 1

In this tintype photograph the soldier is wearing a forage cap, 5 button Wisconsin State Blouse, and holding a Dresden Rifle Musket similar to those issued to 15th soldiers at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin, in late 1861 and early 1862.  To see an enlargement of this image, click HERE. This photo belongs to and is used with permission of Robert Zinkgraf.
Photo of an unknown 2nd Lieutenant in the 15th Wisconsin in uniform. Unknown No. 2

According to the backmark on the photograph, this 2nd Lieutenant had his image taken by "J. Bodtker" in Madison, Wisconsin. This image is from an album which contains photos of men who are known to have been in the 15th.  To see an enlargement of this image, click HERE.  According to Jay Weinstock, this is photo is probably of John T. Rice of Company C.  This photo belongs to and is used with the permission of Marc and Beth Storch.
Photo of an unknown officer in uniform who is believed to have been in the 15th Wisconsin. Unknown No. 3

According to the backmark on the photograph, this officer had his image taken by "Brand's" in Chicago, Illinois. The 15th Wisconsin was in Chicago for a few hours in early March, 1862, but their schedule probably precluded having an image taken then.  However, part of Company A was raised from the Chicago area, so this could be a Captain, 1st Lieutenant, or 2nd Lieutenant of Co. A.  This image is from an album which contains photos of men who are known to have been in the 15th. To see an enlargement of this image, click HERE. Photo of an unknown officern in uniform who is beleived to have been in the 15th Wisconsin. Unknown No. 4

According to the backmark on the photograph, this very tall officer, whose rank is not visible, had his image taken by "T. M. Schleier" in Nashville, Tennessee.  The 15th was stationed in the Nashville area in November and December, 1862.  However, Nashville was also a major transit point and hospital location for 15th soldiers from then through their muster out in early 1865.  Several 15th soldiers who were promoted to the rank of a commissioned officer were mustered out of their old rank and into their new at Nashville.  It was common for a newly promoted soldier to have his image taken, but he might also do so at any time that a photographer was handy.  This image is from an album which contains photos of men who are known to have been in the 15th. To see an enlargement of this image, click HERE. According to Jay Weinstock, this is quite possibly a photo of Thor Simonson of Company F.  This photo belongs to and is used with the permission of Marc and Beth Storch.
Photo of an unknown enlisted man in uniform who is beleived to have been in the 15th Wisconsin. Unknown No. 5

According to the backmark on the photograph, this enlisted man had his image taken by "Fuller" in Madison, Wisconsin.  Someone wrote "Mower (Warner's Son)" on the back of the photo.  He is wearing a frock coat like those issued to the 15th in May 1862.  The 15th was not in Madison between early March 1862, and its' muster out by companies from December 1864 through February 1865.  Therefore this image was probably taken when this soldier was: first enlisted as a recruit to fill vacancies sometime after the 15th left Wisconsin in March 1862; back in Wisconsin on recruiting duty in December 1863 through March or April of 1863; at home on leave at any point after May 1862 until early 1865; or back from the war after being mustered out of the army.  This image is from an album which contains photos of men who are known to have been in the 15th. Photo of an unknown Private in uniform who is believed to have been in the 15th Wisconsin. Unknown No. 6

According to the backmark on the photograph, this enlisted man had his image taken by "J. B. Medlar" in Jefferson, Wisconsin.  He is wearing a forage cap and holding a Dresden Rifle Musket similar to those issued to the 15th at Camp Randall in early 1862, and is wearing a frock coat like the 15th first received in late May, 1862.  Since the photo was taken in Jefferson, it suggests that he had his image taken when he was: first enlisted as a recruit sometime after the 15th left Wisconsin in March 1862; back in Wisconsin on recruiting duty in December 1863 through that winter; or at home on leave sometime after May 1862.  This image is from an album which contains photos of men who are known to have been in the 15th.  To see an enlargement of this image, click HERE. This photo belongs to and is used with the permission of Marc and Beth Storch.
