The Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, September 19-20, 1863, was the second bloodiest battle of the American Civil War (1861-1865). According to official reports, the 15th Wisconsin in Heg's Brigade (3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Corps) took 176 officers and enlisted men into the fight and suffered 111 killed, wounded, or missing (mostly prisoners of war, many of who died in prison) -- a staggering 63% casualty rate.
Considerable efforts have been made to determine, to the extent that records permit, where each 15th soldier was, and what happened to him, at Chickamauga. This was one of a number of efforts made to provide a detailed historical background for the reenactors who portrayed the Scandinavian Regiment at the Chickamauga reenactment, which took place September 17-19, 1999, in northern Georgia near the site of the original fighting. It is hoped that this information will also prove of value to descendants of 15th soldiers.
This page contains what is believed to be a nearly complete list of all the soldiers who were members of the 15th's Field & Staff or who were assigned regimental duties at the time of Chickamauga. By the end of 2 hellish days there, all of the 15th's Field Officers were either killed, wounded, or captured, leaving the regiment in command of Captain Mons Grinager of Company K.
The table below contains the names and fates of soldiers who are known or believed to have been in action with the 15th Field & Staff during the fighting. After the table is a list of 15th soldiers whose location during the battle is not known. Following that is a list of 15th soldiers who are known or believed not to have been on the field with the regiment during the battle. Clicking on a soldier's name that is underlined and in color will bring up a detailed military profile of him. To see a list of definitions for the abbreviations and terms used, click HERE.
Based on a careful review of the sources cited below, it is confirmed that the 15th went into the Battle of Chickamauga with 3 of its 4 Field Officers (Colonel Heg being in command of the brigade).
